Innovative Teachers and Students at Work!

Collinsville ISD is available to the world through its Internet Radio class. By leveraging donations and used hardware, a student broadcasting class offers music, news , interviews and weather forecasts through the Internet. Ken Kemp, the district's technology director and Intermediate school principal reports that the class is an effective way to introduce students to knowledge and skills needed in a broadcasting career. The class was recently featured on a KXII new report.

Students from Melissa Ridge Elementary in Melissa ISD recently competed in the national Interwrite Makeover Video Contest. The students, with help from third grade teacher Karen Rose, created a video parody entitled “It’s a Low Tech Life”. Congratulations to these innovative students.

Partial Loan Forgiveness or Deferment

Teachers with certain types of student loans may qualify for partial loan forgiveness, deferment, or cancellation benefits. Eligibility for these benefits depends on the type of loan the teacher has, the date of his/her first loan, whether the school where the borrower is teaching is listed as a designated low-income school, the length of teaching time, and in certain cases the subject-matter being taught. Some loans have no benefits. Texas designated subject-matter teacher shortage areas for the 2007-2008 school year are mathematics, foreign language, special education, science, bilingual/ESL, and Technology Applications. Click here for additional information.

Fingerprinting and Criminal History

Senate Bill 9, passed by the 80th Texas Legislature, directed the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) to create rules that would in part establish a deadline for a certified educator to submit fingerprints in compliance with the law. The SBEC rules, which are now effective, state that a certified educator’s national criminal history record must be received by the Texas Education Agency staff within 80 days after receiving a notice to submit fingerprints in compliance with SB9. Failure to do so would result in the individual’s certificate being placed on inactive status, causing the person to become ineligible for employment in a Texas public school in a position that requires educator certification.

Starting in January, the state will begin fingerprinting or conducting criminal history background checks on about 1 million certified and non-certified Texas school district employees over the next four years. Senate Bill 9,
